2010 Eastern Section Honorable Mention
Honorable Mention - Beacon Architecture + Design, PLLC
Project Name: Cooper Residence
Completion Date: 4/30/09
Location of Project: Jamesville, NC
Short Description of Project:
Designed for a service-disabled veteran as part of a network television series, the home emphasizes the clients dream to fuse a rustic camp aesthetic with a modern architectural form. In addition, a fully ADA accessible layout was required due to several family member’s physical constraints. Jeffrey Cooper, the father of the family, was wheelchair bound due to a degenerative nerve condition. His son lost an arm in an accident. Both conditions required thoughtful planning to allow access through out the house while keeping the building size reasonable.
All of the architect’s design and construction management time was donated to the project to keep overall costs to a minimum.
The design is a fusion of the modern and the country. A steeply pitched roof and prow form combine to create a dramatic and open interior living space. All spaces exceeded ADA requirements and allowed all members of the house entry. Donated materials were incorporated into the design to create an architectural collage.
Type of Construction:
Wood construction, wood trusses and slab on grade.
Physical and Environmental:
The site was relatively isolated and rural.
Because the family had a fixed income, the design integrated energy efficient construction in order to lower operating/ownership costs. The green features included spray-foam insulation, wood (insulated) veneer logs, a small wind turbine, low voc paints, pre-fabricated roof trusses, deep overhangs for shading and low-e glazing.
Almost all materials were donated by national or local suppliers. Since the home had to built with primarily donated material, the architect had a limited palette of materials with which to design. For example, the exterior log cladding was from a vendor who was eager to demonstrate its sustainability. Nearly all other labor on the job was also donated.
